The Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation-Belize Chapter (MSBC) in partnership with the Ya’axché Conservation Trust (Ya’axché) and the Global Trees Campaign (GTC) are organizing the 10th instalment of the annual natural resource management and research symposium under the theme “Science Based Management for the Sustainable Use and Conservation of Belize’s Natural Resources”. This year’s symposium is an effort to maximize the impact of knowledge sharing by combining the 2nd Global Trees Symposium and the 10th NRM symposium. The Global Trees Symposium is an effort to highlight the importance of rare and threatened tree species and the management practices that can ensure the survival of these species in the long term.

The MSBC is promoting science and research at the level of academia and NGOs for the improved and enhanced management of Belize’s natural resources. In the spirit of “The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, we would like to highlight Goal 13, Goal 14 and Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals. As Belize continues to develop economically there is mounting concern as this process happens at the expense of the environment. The MSBC and Ya’axché would also like to acknowledge the strides made for improved biological conservation as Belize strives to meet its commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Of particular interest this year we would encourage showcasing the work in a few important sectors: Sustainable Forestry, Sustainable Agriculture, Species Conservation (Terrestrial and Marine), Sustainable Fisheries and Science Based Adaptive Management. We also encourage Ecological Research that adds to the scientific knowledge base in Belize. While these are the areas that we would like to cover at this year’s symposium we are not limiting it to these.

Due to the nature of this collaboration and the areas of interest that are proposed, the 10th NRM and Research Symposium & 2nd Global Trees Symposium will see the return of a two-day event that will gather a greater number of professionals and practitioners in conservation. We hope this event will be a great opportunity to get an overview at the status of our resources and provide a platform for information sharing among Belize’s growing conservation sector.
